Pocklington School sixth former Jessica Pidgeon took part in her first regatta rowing in a coxed four for York City Senior Squad recently.

The team raced and beat St John’s College from Durham University in the semi-final and Leeds University in the final of the York Spring Regatta, winning the race by three lengths over an 800-metre course.

Jessica is now is the proud owner of her first tankard. Jessica started rowing in August 2014 and was selected for the York City Senior squad in November.

Getting up at 6am every Sunday to row for four hours, and Saturdays too in the school holidays, Jess is a very keen competitive rower.

She has competed in several head races in preparation for the regatta season and is excited to be joining one of the three squads from York going to the women’s Henley Regatta in May. The Henley Women’s Regatta is the premier rowing regatta for women in the UK.

More than 1,000 women aim to compete and win at the regatta annually.

Crews travel from all around the world to race over the famous Henley Regatta course from as far afield as New Zealand and the United States and as nearby as Ireland, making Henley Women’s Regatta an international event.
