Distraction burglars caught

THIEVES broke into pensioner’s home in Full Sutton and were then involved in a police chase on the A1079.

The burglary happened on Tuesday 29 January in Bridlington Road while the 80-year-old woman was at home. She heard a knock at the door and when she answered saw a man, who claimed he had lost his ball in her rear garden.

The elderly woman left her home and went into the back garden with the man to find the missing ball.

She had left her front door unlocked and insecure while she helped look for the ball and the man engaged her in conversation.

When the lady returned inside her bungalow, she noticed a different man rushing to leave her front garden. The man got into a dark coloured car and made off in the direction of Stamford Bridge.

The elderly lady then realised her handbag was missing and drawers had been opened in her bedroom.

The lady rang the police and within moments officers from the East Riding were searching for the car.

An officer spotted a similar vehicle travelling along A1079 towards Market Weighton and arranged for additional patrols to deploy a stinger ahead of the car.

The car was followed along the A1079 by a marked police car, with the siren sounding for a length of time, before the car stopped in a lay-by.

Two men inside the car were arrested for burglary and the property from the burglary was recovered inside the vehicle.

A 44-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, both from Hull, were arrested and have been released on conditional bail until later this month.
