Sir Greg Knight welcomes tougher sentences for animal abusers as Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act 2021 becomes law
A new Parliamentary Bill to increase penalties for the country’s worst animal abusers is set to be become law this weekend.
The Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act 2021 has now passed all its stages in Parliament. The measure, co-sponsored by Sir Greg Knight MP, introduces tougher prison sentences for those found guilty of animal cruelty by increasing the penalty from a maximum jail term of six months to five years.
Sir Greg said: “This is great news. Higher penalties should deter much of the abuse and lead to the better treatment of animals.
“For too long, the cruellest animal abusers have got away with virtually just a slap on the wrist, but that will soon end. The public want those who treat pets or other animals badly to be punished appropriately and these jail sentences are a warranted deterrent.”
