Humberside Police are appealing for information following a resurfacing scam in the East Riding of Yorkshire on Wednesday 13 August 2014.

A member of staff at Drakes Garage, York Road, Shiptonthorpe was contacted by a group of men who where resurfacing in the area. They allegedly claimed to be working for the council and had a large amount of chippings left over which were available to be laid free of charge if the garage wanted it.

The member of staff agreed and the chippings were laid on the forecourt. However, three hours later a man rang the garage allegedly saying that they wanted paying for the chippings and demanded £7000 and said the labour was free but the tarmac wasn’t.

When the garage refused they threatened to cause damage to the garage. Fearing for the garage the member of staff rang the police.

Detective investigating the incident would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the men in the area, details of the vehicle they were using or if they have private CCTV available which may have captured the men.

In addition, other members of the public are being warned not to fall foul of similar scams and ensure they have written agreements in place prior to agreeing to any work.

Anyone with information about the incident are urged to call Humberside Police on 101 quoting crime reference number 2064846 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
