A special event will be held at Pocklington Arts Centre to raise money for Kate Amin – the Woldgate College teacher who was diagnosed with bowel cancer and secondary liver cancer.

An evening of music, entitled Kate Kicks Cancer, will take place at the venue on Monday 5 February at 7.30pm.

Talented former students Katie Wood, Megan Preece, Livvy Rooks and Melanie McCabe are all returning to Pocklington to perform at the concert.

They will be joined by the current Woldgate School choir and the Forgotten Voices Community Choir.

Kate was at the centre of an £18,000 fundraising campaign to help pay for a drug called Avastin which helps to battle her conditions.

Thanks to the kindness of the community the target was hit after funds from Woldgate’s pupils were taken into account.

Kate recently gave her friends an update about her battle.

She said: “The news is positive, my tumours have decreased in size. The plan for now is to continue with chemotherapy while we wait to see what else can be done.

“One thing the doctor was very sure about is that the Avastin, which the fundraising has paid for, has made a difference.

“I want to thank everyone who has donated, fundraised, sent good wishes, it’s all meant so much. Christmas is the time of giving, and you have all given me a very precious gift.”

One of the people at the heart of the campaign, Lucy Chapman, said: “The fundraising will continue to help Kate with housing and living costs (as she’s no longer receiving wages) as well as any potential future courses of treatment, so the JustGiving page will stay open.”

Sam Dunkley, director of Performing Arts etc and formerly community music coordinator at Woldgate, said: “When I heard that Kate was ill it was a real shock and when I found out that the drugs she needed were not funded by the NHS I thought the concert would be a fantastic way of bringing people together.

“It will be a fantastic event, to have such a range of people coming together in support of Kate, sharing music and performances, and at Pocklington Arts Centre, the heart of the community.”

Tickets for the evening, priced £10, are available from or by calling 01759 301547.
