A Pocklington electrical shop and family business which has been running for 83 years is set to close its doors for the final time.
Eric Lee Electrical, on Market Place, which was founded in 1933, will close down on 16 June, with six people set to lose their jobs.
The owners Mark and Irene Tinson said the business is to cease trading because it is struggling to make a profit.
Mark, who has owned the business with his wife Irene since 2002, said: “We are closing because the way people shop has and is changing, the march to online shopping is endless, rates being a major factor, supermarkets have also had their part to play. While we have continued to be busy, profit has been hard to find in the very competitive electrical retail trade.
“When we were approached with a view to selling the property we looked at the recent past and probable future, and after much soul searching, regretfully decided that it was the best course of action to take. Sadly that meant six people including ourselves losing our employment.”
The owners say they do not know what will happen to the premises after the business closes.
Mark added: “We will be sad to see it all go it has been a big part of our lives for a long time as Irene started work here back in 1983 and one of our staff members as been with the company since 1969. We will also miss our loyal customers, many of whom we have got to know very well. We wish to thank everyone who have supported us over the years.”
Eric Lee used to trade from the property opposite, which was recently a dry cleaners, when the business first opened in 1933.
Pocklington history group archivist, Andrew Sefton, says Eric Lee was the first electrical business in Pocklington that followed the electrification of the town in 1933 (Wycliffe Everingham had an earlier small electrical business in the 1920’s), and it was followed by Fred Kirk who had a business operating in Railway Street soon after the war.
Mr Sefton added that the Lee family are an old Pocklington area family which dates back to the 18th century. Elsie Moore, from Everingham, and Eric Lee, from Pocklington, married in Hayton in 1930. Soon after they founded the electrical business in which they both worked until they retired in 1968.
Eric and Elsie lived in St Peter’s Square, where the Sonali restaurant is now.
Eric Lee Electrical is a member of Euronics, a large electrical buying group. Euronics stores are all independent electrical retailers.
