Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob SquarePants were among the characters on display during the Wilberfoss Scarecrow Festival at the weekend.

Many residents and visitors wandered the village’s streets in search of 30 scarecrows. The theme for the event was characters from children’s TV programmes.

The event raised £886, with proceeds going to Wilberfoss WI, the village’s Community Centre and funding for research into brain tumours in children in memory of Oscar Hughes. Nine-year-old Oscar, from Dunnington, died in May after a relapse in his recovery from a brain tumour.

Mandy Brisco, one of the festival’s organisers, said: “We had a very good turnout.

“The scarecrows were diverse. It was a great family event with people coming from quite a few different places. There were people from Bradford and Lincolnshire.”

A competition was held for people to guess the names of the scarecrows, which they found using maps available from Wilberfoss Community Centre. The winner of the £25 prize was Janine Thompson.

Matthew Winstone won £25 for creating the ‘best scarecrow’, which was Bananaman.
