Staff at a butcher’s shop in Pocklington are in shock after a thief stole £4,500 from the business.
The incident happened at W F Burton High Class Butcher, on Market Place, while the shop was closed between 7pm on 20 June and 6am on 22 June.
The suspect, who has been captured on CCTV at the shop, is believed to have used a key, found to be missing from the premises, to get in through a rear door. The offender then locked up again on leaving the scene, according to Humberside Police.
Manager of the shop, Mike Messer, 51, who has worked at the business since 1997, said: “We realised on the Monday morning [that the money had gone missing]. Everybody was shocked by it. It’s not happened before.
“Hopefully if we can get some disclosure from the CCTV we can maybe help catch this person and it won’t happen to anyone else.” He added: “Everybody works really hard at this shop and £4,500 is a lot to a business like this. We’re not talking about potentially closing the business but it has had a serious impact.”
Mr Messer has warned local businesses to be on their guard following the theft.
He said: “Make sure nobody is watching. Make sure you are careful with what you do. You don’t always realise people may be watching you. You don’t think this sort of thing can happen to you.
“Having CCTV is a good step for anyone.”
Witnesses, or anyone able to identify the suspect, are asked to call Humberside Police on 101, quoting crime reference number 2121969.
