Butcher’s pies are the best in Britain

A VILLAGE butchers is celebrating after being crowned the pork pie champion of Britain.

David Mounfield, who runs JA Mounfield & Sons in Bubwith was singled out for his traditional 1lb pork pie during an award ceremony in London run by BPEX, who monitor butchers across the country.

It was the third time the family firm had made the national final. They were named the north east winners at the Great Yorkshire Showground in November of last year, and were put through to the grand final.

Mr Mounfield said: “It’s a real achievement, it’s been a team effort with five of us involved, but we had no idea that we would win.

“We’ve been to the final twice before and I suppose it’s like any competition, you just keep knocking on the door- although this time it finally opened for us!”

The £2.90 pie is made from a 100 year-old recipe that started with his grandparents. The meat is sourced locally and they have their own abattoir on site to allow strict quality control when making the pies.

The award-winning pie was tasted by a panel of judges, one of which described it as being “an outstanding pie, like no other I’ve tasted.” As well as the award, the business was presented with an original watercolour of a Gloucester Old Spot pig, which has been placed into the shop.
