A 62-year-old Market Weighton woman has abseiled down a 120ft building to raise funds for charity.

Joyce Hewitt of Medforth Street, built up enough courage to climb down Sheffield Hallam University’s Owen Building recently, during windy conditions.

The British Red Cross volunteer held a bucket collection at different pubs in Pocklington seeking donations for her abseil.

The £170 she raised will go to the British Red Cross.

She said: “It was great. I would like to do it again. It was when there was gales. Once I got over the edge it was fine.

“I’ve never done anything like it before. I’ve got to an age where I am going to go for these things.”

The British Red Cross is desperately in need of more volunteers for the Pocklington and Goole areas. Anyone interested in helping can call Diane Dunhill on 01482 499837.
