ANYONE wanting to hire a room at Burnby Hall in Pocklington will have to pay up to five times as much from the start of this year, the Post can reveal.
One angry customer who used to hire the hall for a scrapbooking group could not believe how much prices had surged when she received a letter from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Kate Wadsworth, 65, of Browning Road, Pocklington, hired the hall once a month for the ‘Scrap N Chat’ group to share in a paper craft hobby.
The group paid £35 to use the hall on a Saturday from 1.30pm-5.30pm but the letter from the council says that, from 1 January, to hire the hall on the same day and at the same time it would cost them £115.
If they were to hire the hall from 1pm-5pm it would be £74, which is still more than double the cost they originally paid.
The letter states that there is a £41 surcharge to use the hall after 5pm.
But the biggest price increase is for hiring the venue on a weekday as next year it will cost £50 for the morning, 9am- 12.30pm, and £58 for the afternoon, 1.30pm-5pm.
Previously, it used to be just £10 for half a day Monday to Friday.
Mrs Wadsworth said she was suprised by the size of the price hike.
She said: “I knew there was going to be a price increase but I did not expect it to be that colossal.”
When Mrs Wadsworth contacted the council to ask why the price had risen so much, she was told it was because there had not been a price increase for 10 years.
She said: “I just think it is bad management that they have done nothing about it and then put it up so much.”
A spokesman for East Riding Council said: “We have been looking at prices in East Riding to standardise them.
“The hall is hiring at prices that are not covering the costs to open it at weekends.”
Mrs Wadsworth has stopped using Burnby Hall and said she will be hiring a room at Pocklington Methodist Church in future.
