All aboard for canal trips on the New Horizons boat
Good Friday will see the start of the 2016 season for Pocklington Canal Amenity Society's trip boat New Horizons.
The canal society’s standard 30-minute taster trips will run on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday and then every Sunday and Bank Holiday until the end of October.
The trips run from noon until 4.15pm approximately, departing from the Melbourne Arm. No booking required but at busy times there may be a short wait.
The boat’s dedicated and experienced crew volunteers are ready to welcome visitors old and new to enjoy this beautiful and unspoilt canal.
Last year was especially good for spotting the kingfishers which live along the canal, some of the 13 species of dragonflies and damselflies along with all the other exceptional flora and fauna. The crew will also be delighted to answer questions and inform passengers about everything that is happening on the canal, especially in relation the 1815-2018 bicentenary appeal.
A spokesman for the society said: “As many of you know major work will be starting very soon on the restoration of Thornton Lock. This is the first stage of restoring navigation from Melbourne to Bielby, which hopefully will be completed in 2018.
“The Pocklington Canal forms part of an area that is of national and international importance for wildlife. The canal itself has natural banking, used by water voles and has far more aquatic plants than most other canals.
“Over recent years more and more people and groups have taken to booking New Horizons for longer trips (anything from two to six hours).
“The society’s volunteers welcome people from all walks of life and are proud of the fact that we have catered for passengers from various community groups, social groups and family groups.
“Furthermore, as in previous years, we will be offering the opportunity for individuals, couples and small groups (generally up to four) to partake in a longer trip without an exclusive booking. These are on Saturdays, to help accommodate those who are working during the week.”
In 2016, these open trips will be on the following dates:
Saturday 21 May to Gardham Lock (3h, 10am start).
Saturday 25 June to Hagg Bridge (4h, 2pm start).
Saturday 23 July to Gardham Lock (3h, 3pm start).
Saturday 20 Aug to East Cottingwith (6h, 10am start).
Saturday 17 Sept to Gardham Lock (3h, 10am start).
