THE number of horses being abandoned or neglected is putting the RSPCA under pressure as never before.

The charity is dealing with large numbers of dead or dying horses being dumped in remote spots across the region and is currently looking after 227 horses in the north.

Northern England has been identified as the worst place nationally for horse abandonment and Cathy Hyde, equine officer for the area, said: “We are, quite honestly, struggling to keep up with what is a mounting crisis.”
