More than 970 extra evening and weekend appointments have been offered to patients since October as part of Central York’s ‘Improving Access to Primary Care’ service.
Pocklington Group Practice (The Beckside Centre) has helped contribute to this number as it is one of four hubs offering the appointments across the area.
The extra NHS appointments, which are in addition to standard, weekday GP appointment times, have been especially welcomed by people who prefer to see a doctor outside normal working hours.
The new scheme was launched on Monday 1 October and initial feedback has been very positive, say contract holders Nimbuscare Ltd.
Already, more than 95% of patients surveyed said they would be likely or very likely to recommend the service to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment.
Dr Mike Holmes, chair of Nimbuscare Ltd, said: “People in the York area said they found it difficult to get a GP appointment at a time to suit them, so this new service is about giving people a better choice of time and day.
“We will soon be introducing other options, such as video consultations where patients can speak to a doctor on a mobile device or computer.”
