Residents in a nearby village are celebrating after their community theatre group received a £5,000 boost from the OneFamily Foundation.
OneFamily customer, Elizabeth Thompson, who is treasurer for the Shiptonthorpe Village Hall and has been performing with the community theatre group for the past five years, put the group forward for the award.
The theatre group is based at the village hall since 2009 and performs a yearly pantomime to a sell-out audience of almost 500 people. The proceeds raised go towards the refurbishment of the hall.
In previous years, the group borrowed or hired lighting equipment for its performances and events, which proved to be time consuming and expensive.
However, the money from the OneFamily Foundation means it is now able to fund the purchase and installation of a lighting rig for the hall.
She said: “When we first moved to the village 10 years ago, the hall was in a state of disrepair and due to be sold for housing development.
“A group of us campaigned for it to be saved and, happily, our voices were heard. It’s since been renovated and has become an integral part of the village.
“There’s always something going on – from social events to exercise classes and community groups practicing and performing.”
Elizabeth added: “Now, thanks to OneFamily, we can pay for the lights to be installed at the hall permanently, and any funds we raise in the future can be put back into the community.
“We can’t thank OneFamily, and of course everyone who got behind us, enough!”
James Hale, customer engagement manager at OneFamily said: “We are delighted to award £5,000 to the theatre group.
“The village hall is clearly an important part of village life and a place that brings the whole community together, as is evidenced by the many volunteers involved and the restoration works that have taken place over the past decade.
“Communities thrive when they have a shared space and a common goal, so we’re absolutely delighted to know that we have played our part in improving facilities for Shiptonthorpe.”
