As of Sunday, December 13, 1,108 cases with the variant had been identified.

The Covid Genomics UK Consortium (COG-UK), which was set up to provide the fast-turnaround data on the spread and evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19, recorded the case.

The variant strand has been named VUI – 202012/01 (the first Variant Under Investigation in December 2020).

The strain was identified due to Public Health England’s (PHE) enhanced monitoring following an increase in cases seen in Kent and London.

As of Sunday, December 13, 1,108 cases with the variant had been identified.

A COG-UK report said: “Mutations arise naturally in the SARS-CoV-2 genome as the virus replicates and circulates in the human population. At this point in time there is no reason to believe that this mutation will affect vaccine efficacy.”

Dr Susan Hopkins, Test and Trace and PHE Joint Medical Advisor, said: “There is currently no evidence that this strain causes more severe illness, although it is being detected in a wide geography especially where there are increased cases being detected.

“The best way to stop infection is to stick to the rules – wash our hands, wear a face covering and keep our distance from others.”
