Pocklington Market will remain open during lockdown but for food sales only.

The council said it will also continue to deliver vital public services.

Financial support for businesses will be made available and the council will communicate how to access this as soon as possible.

Councillor Richard Burton, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The announcement from the Government is a reminder that Covid-19 is still present and is a very real public health threat.

“Rising infection rates are a real concern and we cannot afford to be complacent as we head into the winter.

“Throughout this pandemic, East Riding residents, businesses and communities have demonstrated a collective public spirit and a real determination to get through this together.

“I know that this announcement will bring new challenges and will be met with understandable concern and frustration, but we must now ask for the same selfless resolve that we saw at the outset of this terrible pandemic and to once again put the health and wellbeing of family, friends and wider communities first in order to save lives.”
