A church hall is undergoing a refurbishment to improve its facilities for the benefit of the community.

The Tower Room upgrade project, at St Nicholas’ Church in Dunnington, has received a £1,000 donation from the Persimmon Homes Community Champion scheme.

The funding will go towards reroofing the community hall and upgrading its heating system.

Speaking on behalf of the project, Peter Helm said: “The Tower Room is regularly used by toddler and fellowship groups as well as hosting art, sewing and yoga classes.

“However, we want to support more people in our community by welcoming new groups, clubs and classes, but to do this we need to address the building’s poor condition.

“We are fundraising, but Persimmon Homes’ support is a huge boost to our efforts.”

Persimmon Homes Yorkshire makes two donations of up to £1,000 every month to grassroots groups and charities across the region.

Scott Waters, managing director of Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said: “Community Champions has allowed us to support dozens of good causes that are focused on supporting the heart of the community, so we were very pleased to help fund St Nicholas’ Church Tower Room project.”

In addition to the Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions scheme, the housebuilder has launched its Building Futures initiative which supports groups working with under-18s.

The scheme will make grants to projects across education and arts, health and sport, with the potential of a £100,000 prize giveaway.
