Just a minute! If you’ve got a play – and just 60 seconds will do – the Stephen Joseph Theatre wants to hear from you.
Celebratory events are taking place throughout 2015 for the Scarborough theatre’s 60th anniversary year and it is now welcoming the public to get involved in an ambitious new project, 60 by 60 - that’s 60 plays, each lasting 60 seconds, written by established, emerging and community writers.
The theatre is inviting script submissions for audio plays from the community, 20 of which will be recorded and performed alongside recognised playwrights including John Godber, Jane Thornton and Deborah McAndrew.
The action must take place in a cinema, library or school – the current and two former homes of the company – and can be written for up to six actors, three male and three female, who can also play multiple roles.
Artistic director Chris Monks will read and select the community plays which will be recorded by professional actors, directors and technicians who will donate their services for free. For the duration of the project, the list of authors will be made available however the plays will not be individually credited.
Chris Monks said: “60 by 60 is an exciting and ambitious project; we have 60-second plays by 20 established and 20 newer playwrights and now we’re inviting members of the community to show us what they’ve got. It’s open to anyone who wants to give it a try. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to have their play heard alongside some of the UK’s top playwrights.”

The audio plays are due to be released on the website www.sjt.uk.com in autumn. To access the online recordings, listeners will be invited to make a donation to the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s 7th Wave Fund which supports new writing and emerging artists. A rehearsed reading of the 60 plays is also planned as part of the 2015 autumn/winter season.
Submissions must not exceed 60 seconds in length, including stating the title. Scripts should be emailed to SJT60@sjt.uk.com no later than 31 March, 2015, including name, age (if under 18) and contact number.
