Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club welcomed the prospect of the 2012 cricket season at their annual club dinner held at Fulford Golf Club on Friday.
Guest of honour was Bernard Stevens, president of the York Senior Cricket League who, in celebrating the league’s centenary this year, also paid tribute to Woodhouse’s position as current league champions and the club’s contribution to the league in the 70 years since its formation in 1942.
Club president Richard Hobson responded to his kind words and club chairman John Stroughair gained unanimous approval in selecting Marcus Smith as clubman of the year for 2011. As well as captaining the club’s second team to promotion in an unbeaten season, Marcus has given valuable time and effort on both the cricket committee and the executive committee. He was rightly described as ‘Woodhouse through and through’.
Cricket starts on Saturday 7 April with the traditional pre-season opener at home to Ilkley CC.
The next social event is the pre-season Sunday lunch on Sunday 15 April. Places can be booked with Martin Smith on 01904 608947.
This will be followed by the first competitive match, when the first team host Sessay for the York Senior League President’s Trophy (1.30 pm start).
