Tennis: Pocklington Tennis Club Ladies and Mixed team reports

Pocklington Ladies A team welcomed Driffield LTC, and regular pairs Ruth Hill/Emma Owen and Mel Duncan/Lisa Eade both ran out easy winners of all three sets.

Fiona Lambert/Rachel Bloom secured the other set for a yet another strong 7-2 win for Pocklington.

Ladies B team was away against neighbours Market Weighton A, on a beautiful summer’s evening on their grass courts. Loobie Kettlewell was partnered by daughter Sophie and, with some impressive play, were unfortunate to lose one tie-break, and the other sets to 6 and 4. New pairing of Andrea Bland/Jean Hunter and stalwarts Rosanne Dane/Angela Bush both won one set apiece, against Tina Rook/Sue Medley. But the grass court skills of the other Market Weighton players triumphed, and the overall outcome was a 2-7 loss for Pock. Ladies D were on storming form against Driffield LTC D, with Janet Leach/Ali Smith, Mel Watson/Josephine Nuttman, and Sheila Williams/Alice Mowforth taking all sets before them, up to a lead of 7-0, when rain stopped play.

Pock A mixed team claimed an excellent victory over Cherry Burton A, who, although newly promoted to Division One, were unbeaten to date. It was a close-fought match, with Trevor Loten/Mel Duncan winning one tie-break, losing another, and going down 5-8 in the other set. Helen Whilesmith/ Chris Gunby won two sets relatively easily, but lost their other in a tie-break. Lisa Eade/Damian Galloway got their money’s worth of play, with two 8-6 wins, and a tie-break loss. So, a 5-4 win to Pocklington.

The Mixed B team travelled to Beverley and East Riding, for a lesson in Division One tennis. Captain Rachel Bloom and partner Zak Los started the evening well, winning their first set in a tie-breaks. Fiona Lambert/Ross Gleig and Jean Hunter/Mick Douglas battled hard, and took many games to deuce, but were not able to convert. Jean and Mick had a brief glimpse of success by winning their first three games of one set until the Beverley pair cranked up their game to run out 8-3 winners. Another 1-8 loss for the Mixed B. Having lost 3-6 to Middleton last week, Pock D Mixed were looking for a home win against Sledmere B, but were unable to break their losing streak, with another 3-6 loss for Pock.

At last a result for the Mixed E team, against Sledmere D. The hard-hitting duo of last season, Rosanne Dane and Mark Smith, played together for the first time this season and proved themselves the worthy title of top couple. They won all three sets, dropping seven games. Not far behind were the two lefties, Helen Marsden and Nigel Bartram, who also won all three sets, losing 13 games. To complete the good winning score of 1-8, the sibling pair of Louise Durkin and Niki Arnold won two sets; the last one was a tight game and they were pipped at the post by Sledmere who took the set 8-6.

In the Fulford League last week, Ladies A beat Wigginton 73-35; and Ladies B had yet another win at Boston Spa on Sunday, 62 games to 48, a better result than expected as Boston Spa were the other team to go up alongside them.
