After the disappointment of their first match of the season being cancelled last week, Sutton ladies were raring to go. They played host to Copmanthorpe in their first match in division four, after gaining promotion last season.
So, with some apprehension, Lucy Collier paired with Anna Fell, Peggy Hodgson with Romualda Plewes and Clare Field with Jane Pearson, all took to the courts. After a steady first game, it was level-pegging after the first rubber. By the second rubber, everyone had relaxed and the pairs all had good wins, giving them an overall lead of seven games. They increased their lead in the third rubber to 10 games and celebrated their first win in division four, 59-49. Well done to Lucy and Anna, the top-scorers with 23 games.
The first mixed team had their first fixture of the season at a very sunny Fulford on Monday evening. Goldie Cosby and Chris Hobson were the top-scoring pair with 17 games. Unfortunately the team couldn’t do enough to win the match but are feeling more confident for next week’s fixture with one match under their belt.
The second mixed team played against Dunnington on Wednesday night on the slightly soggy Sutton courts. They enjoyed an excellent start to the season with a convincing 64-44 win. Sadly, Peggy Hodgson, new second team captain, was unable to play due to work commitments, but her team played very well, with joint top couples of Lucy Collier with Tom Hitchenor and Rachel Mintoff with Sam Hitchenor all winning 22 games, and Anna Fell with Adrian Hitchenor bringing up the rear with 20.
A week with no men’s matches allowed Sutton’s men to discuss how to fill the void that was left after the announcement that the men’s second team captain has offered his position, due to ongoing injury. It was decided that Zak Los would run the second team, with his first match at David Lloyd this weekend.
