The first 10km race of the YDRRL summer series took place on a gloomy and cool evening that was more suited to the winter.
A record field of 260 runners from nine clubs raced from Percy Road, along Kilnwick Road, past the Golf Club and up the Hill to Millington and then back to the town on the Mile. Steven Worth was the first local runner to finish in a fast 38:53, just ahead of Richard Ginn in 39:06 followed by Kevin Norman (second in category) 39:35 then Stuart Smith 40:36 and Martin Harris 40:40. These five, together with Alan Kendra in 42:23, gave Pocklington fourth position in the men’s team event.
Bryan Harris was next back in 42:27 just ahead of the in-form Stuart Evans 42:39, Clive Jeffery 42:37, Mike Pullon 43:48, Patrick Hough 44:08, Gary Tebbutt 44:20, Alison Thornton (first in category), 44:47, Drew Gill 44:52 (PB), Jill Dowson (second in category) 45:05, Colin Shipley 45:53 (PB), Paul Sheridan crossed the line with Lindsay Cameron in 46:07 (PB), Simon Weedy 46:35 (PB), Mike Siddall 46:37, Brett Britton 48:13, Brian Perkins 48:16.
Deborah Cahill in 50:41 was the fourth woman back, giving the women fourth place in the team event. Helen Pickersgill (PB) and Clare Davison were next with 50:49, then Debbie Rycroft 52:28, Rod Robinson 53:32, Jackie Robinson (second in category) 56:07, Faye Jessop 57:07, Sue Vicary 57:16, Steve Ferre 57:57, Emma Barker 61:21 and Di Thompson 63:05.
The next YDRRL race takes place on 15 May in Tadcaster.
Three of the club’s finest went to Halifax on Sunday morning to run the Bluebell 10-mile trail race. Simon Rycroft (73:02), Richard Ginn (approx. 76:00) and Ed Rawlings (79:00) undertook what Simon described as “probably the toughest 10-miler I’ve completed, with absolutely every terrain going, hills, hills and more hills, finished off with a river crossing. One hell of a run, highly recommended.”
They then jumped in a car and drove to Kirkbymoorside to take part in the 10K road race, which was also run by Debbie Rycroft. This race starts with the first couple of miles up hills followed by lots of undulations and a fast downhill finish. Richard finished in 39:25, Simon 40:10; Ed recorded 41:19 and Debbie 52:34.
Parkrun results were (York) Helen Reevell, on the comeback trail, 34:05 and (Hull) Mike Pullon 21:04.
