Rich Daniells followed up his victory in the Captain’s Series with a fine win in the Pro Am Qualifying event held recently at the KP Golf Course.
Competitors were divided into three divisions based on playing handicap, with the winner of each division going through to join recent Europro qualifier Carlo Cuiello in a Pro Am event to be held at Hull Golf Club on 22 August.
A playing handicap of 12 put Rich in Div 1. His round of 43 Stableford points looked difficult to beat and only Steve Johnson looked capable of putting in a challenging score.
With four pars and an eaglethrough the first five holes, Steve looked to be on course to better Rich’s score with ease, but dropped shots on the 16th and 17th which saw Steve finish just short on 42 points.
Division 2 saw Robin Ford qualify with 40 points from Steve Mullarkey on 38 despite dropping four shots on the opening two holes.
Gaz Pudsey blew his chance of qualifying by dropping shots at the 16th and 18th, when net pars would have seen him through.
Div 3 was a close run thing with only three shots covering the six. Early starter Mark Screeton led the way with a 3 under par 39 and will rue dropping two shots at the last.
His lead was not to last long as John Smith put in a steady round of 41. It didn’t start too well for John as he dropped shots at the first two holes but managed to pull them back before the turn.
John’s nearest challenger out on the course was Gary Tavender who was one under par for the front nine but had a run of four pars to put him in the hunt.
However, the tricky 17th saw the end of Gary’s challenge as he three-putted to drop a shot.
A four at the last would still have given him the lead but, once again his putting let him down and he finished with a five and a score of 40 points
