Bubwith Tennis Club Reports for week ending May 5

The season started off with an excellent match for the Bubwith Men’s 1, under the captaincy of Rob Jackson last weekend. The team came through a tricky first test in the new Level 2 league system clutching a 66-42 (10 points to 2) victory against a well organised Appleton Roebuck side. Club debutant Daryl Young, teamed with Paul Blackett , made a solid start to the season with 20 games and 1.5 points.

Next, followed a gritty performance from Rob Jackson and Jon Longthorp, they twice came from behind to claim 23 games and 2.5 points. However, the stars of the day were the ever consistent Shaun Pinchbeck and Doug Smith who also achieved 23 games with the added cherry of victory in all 3 rubbers giving them the maximum 3 points. Overall the pairs all stood up well losing just 1 rubber and drawing a further 2 on the way to picking up those valuable 3 win bonus points.

Next up will be a return to a familiar hunting ground Rowntree Park . The Ladies team in Division 5 had an enjoyable first season match at home to David Lloyd. The final score was 61-47 to David Lloyd. Last Saturday, Dunnington 3 came across to Bubwith for the next Ladies match. This was a close fight right up until the final rubber with the Dunnington 3 first pair against the Bubwith third pair.

The result was a draw, 54/54. Finally, last night the recently promoted Mixed 2 had their first game of the season in Division 9 away to Fulford 6. Top scores were the first pair – Julia Barber and Steve Pinion and third pair Alastair Southworth and Diana Longthorp with 30 games each. Second pair Lizanne Southworth and Chris Cobley , were close runners up with 28 games. The final score was 88-20.
