The 2014 season got off to a flying start with a win for the promotion-seeking ladies team in division 6. Dodging rain showers and playing for the first time on the artificial grass on the West Court, Bubwith ladies excelled against Sherrif Hutton.

The first pair, Anna Airaksinen and Louise Smith, played a solid 32 games, closely followed by Ann Wottge and Gill McGrory with 24 and Lizanne Southworth and Diana Longthorp with 23 games. The final result 79-29.

The men’s first team had their opening match at home to Sutton on Derwent, but made a stuttering start as Jon Longthorp and Daryl Young lost out 2-10 to an impressive number one Sutton pairing.

Shaun Pinchbeck and Doug Smith were narrowly defeated 5-7 in their opener whilst Rob Jackson and Jonathan Clay were able to steady the ship with an 8-4 win.

The second round saw a reverse of results as Rob Jackson and Jon Clay were defeated 5-7, Doug Smith and Shaun Pinchbeck won 7-5, only for Daryl Young and Jon Longthorp to grind out a 6-6 draw leaving things tight going into the third rubber.

With the match on the line, it looked bleak as Rob Jackson and Jon Clay found themselves 1-4 down nearing the halfway point.

However, with a lot of grit and determination they fought to a 6-6 draw and a valuable half point.

Jon Longthorp and Daryl Young were too strong for Sutton’s second pair as they ran out 8-4 winners to set up a tense finish.

Some 16 minutes after the other rubbers had finished, Shaun and Doug fought to finally close out a dogged victory of 7-5. This put the result all square at 54-54, however Bubwith gained a valuable points victory of 6.5 to 5.5.

The men’s seconds had a very close encounter but struggled with the tarmac surface against Cawood.

All the matches were tight. Alastair Southworth and Jason Clarke did very well, top scoring with 20, Dave Booth and Steve Pinion stacked up 15 and Bram Tunbridge and Chris Cobley had 13.

The result was a loss 60- 48, points 8-4.
