2014 tennis season gets underway with a bang

The 2014 tennis season got underway with a bang this week, with Pock Tennis Club teams travelling far and wide across East Yorkshire to fly the Pock flag.

A chilly, misty evening saw the Mixed B and D teams both travelling to Bridlington, with mixed results.

Pock B, playing Brid A who had also been demoted from Division One last season, again had a very close fought match, evidenced in three tie-breaks.

Fiona Lambert/Jim Holding and Jean Hunter/Jim Bloom won two sets apiece, Jim and Jean’s final tie-break set extending long into the gloomy evening before eventually clinching it.

Rachel Bloom/Ross Gleig battled hard but lost their tie-break, leaving Pock 4-5 down in sets. They look forward to the return match on home (astro)turf.

The D team fared better, scoring a strong win over the Bridlington C team.

Josephine Nuttman/Stuart Barnett won all three of their sets comfortably.

Vicky Bland/Gavin Smith won two and lost one on a tie-break, and young Adam Smith, partnered by Lesley Smithson who has made a welcome return to the club after an extended break, won two as well: a good 7-2 win for Pocklington.

The Ladies A and C teams were away at Market Weighton.

The A team played on Market Weighton’s lovely grass courts, which were in perfect condition.

Helen Whilesmith/ Lisa Eade and Mel Duncan /Emma Owen won two sets apiece, with Rachel Bloom/Fiona Lambert competing gamely, but to no avail.

It all hung on the last set which Mel and Emma lost in a nail-biting tie-break 8-5.

The closeness of the result was reflected in the game count: although losing 5-4 in sets, Pock managed to get 50 games to their 48. Again…they look forward to the rematch at home!

The C team scored a resounding 9-0 victory, playing on the hard courts.

Vicky Bland/Helen Marsden, Helen Stephenson/Mel Watson, and Louise Durkin/Helen Fairy gave no quarter to the local rivals.

The Ladies B and D teams were at home, playing Hornsea and Middleton B respectively.

The B team were strong against Hornsea, Andrea Bland/Louise Wilkinson winning all three sets, Jean Hunter/Di Flint winning two, and Loobie Kettlewell/Angela Bush clinching one (having lost a titanic tie-break).

The Ladies D team also recorded a good win: Sheila Williams/Gill Jackson and Jenny Wood/Josephine Nuttman won all three sets, and Shelley Morgan/Ali Smith won one.

All four teams were welcomed with an excellent post-match supper at The Station – much appreciated by all.

Whilst matches are now in full swing, social tennis continues at the Club’s West Green courts, with club nights every Saturday, Sunday and Monday evening from 6pm onwards.

So if you fancy picking up your racket, do come along and join the club.
