In their second game of the weekend, Melbourne hosted Ben Johnsons in the penultimate round of the HPH Cup. Melbourne captain Harry Collins won the toss and put Ben Johnsons in to bat.
Morrison and Agnew had 42 on the board when Morrison was out lbw off the bowling of Malcolm Harrison in the 14th over, Morrison having made 11. Collins bowled Anderson in the 23rd over but it was Agnew who was proving dangerous to Melbourne, hitting any loose ball for six as Melbourne alternated their bowlers. Finally, with the board on 115, Agnew having made 76, was caught by Liam Barlow off the bowling of Harrison (2-31) in the 32nd over.
Drew made 12 before he was bowled by Oliver Steels (2-17) and Steels also featured again when he took an on the boundary catch off the bowling of Clarke to dismiss Holland for 12. The 39th over saw Reynolds caught by Melbourne keeper Matt Beevers off the bowling of Steels. The 40 overs drew to a close with the board on 145-6.
In reply, Melbourne got off to a good start and had 57 on the board after 11 overs but then lost Steels (34) who was caught and bowled by Agnew (2-59). Barlow was out for a golden duck also in the 12th over.
Opener Ian Kirby was joined by AJ Clarke and the two added a further 37 before Clarke (17) was caught by the Ben Johnson keeper Holland off the bowling of Anderson (3-24). Kirby, after making a good 34, was also caught by Holland off the bowling of Drew in the following over and the following three overs saw another two wickets fall with Beevers out lbw and Eastoe caught.
However, Collins and Harrison both batted sensibly and chipped away at the singles and edged their way to the required total in the 36th over, making 148-6. Collins finished on a good 30 not out and Harrison 16 not out.
Melbourne will play North Duffield in the next round.
