Veterans undefeated

Pocklington Veterans.........................................................2

Pocklington Football Managers........................................1

This match, played last Sunday afternoon in torrential rain, was a pulsating, enthralling game. Neither team let the almost waterlogged pitch stop them playing their neat passing football.

There was nothing between the teams, but the Veterans opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when Les Falkingham’s clever free kick floated over a crowded goal area and nestled in the far top corner of the goal. But any team with Baz Garget and Steve Bibby in midfield was not going to lie down and the managers were level on the 18th minute when young Tom Hughes beat the offside trap and raced away to put the ball past the helpless goalkeeper and into the net.

Both teams gave as good as they got, with neither team able to gain the initative. With both teams rotating their subs to keep everyone warm and mobile, the pace of the game didn’t slow throughout the entire match. The decisive break came for the veterans with 15 minutes left in the game, when the Veterans’ top scorer of the season, Ian McCrum, was on hand to score the all-important winner.

The game was a credit to both teams who gave everything. A special thank you to referee Neil Dexter for keeping close control of the game in difficult conditions. This brought to an end a very successful season for the Veterans who have remained undefeated throughout the season, winning 12 and drawing three; true testament to their skill and hard work.

There was a resounding ‘yes’ in the changing room after the game to giving the creaking joints another run out next season. The end of season dinner for the Veterans is 26 May at the Yorkway Motel.
