Stamford Bridge Scorpions...............................................3
Stamford Bridge Scorpions, sponsored by Direct Tile Importers, saw off their local rivals in the final Stamford Bridge derby of the season.
Scorpions played with the slope in the first half and soon took advantage. In the first minute, Saffy Goddard slipped the ball through to Millie Templeman who lashed a fierce shot just wide. It didn’t take long for a goal to come and, when a corner was half-cleared, Alex Harvey rifled a shot into a crowded goalmouth and it was deflected in. More chances came and home keeper Georgia Stanton was on fine form to keep out Templeman and Goddard. It was by no means one-way traffic though, and Stamford battled forward with Ellie Whytock producing dangerous crosses that Natalie Lynch just couldn’t reach and Ella Spanton had to be on her toes to clear. Ellie Fitzmaurice also tested the Scorpions with long strikes and, in slippery conditions, Ellie Barker made some important saves for the Scorpions. At the other end, Scorpions continued to create chances and, after Templeman had headed over from a corner, she finally struck, back-heeling an Emma Orton throw into the net.
Stamford re-grouped at half time and came out strongly. Hannah Robertson was driving them forward and put the Scorpions defence under pressure. Second-half subs Vicky Sands and Emily Hyde both needed to be alert and made saving tackles.
Scorpions were always dangerous on the break, though, and although Eve Walters made some great tackles in the Stamford defence, the passing and movement from Goddard, Harvey and Templeman saw them all get chances. At last, a third was scored when the impressive Harvey found Goddard, who weaved into a space to cross for Templeman to tap home her second.
Stamford never gave up and Scorpions were lucky not to concede when a corner whipped across the goal and Barker needed all her athleticism to tip it over. The home side battled bravely but found Orton an immovable rock and they just couldn’t find the consolation they deserved. The game ended 3-0, giving the Scorpions their ninth league win in ten matches.
