Scorpions secure trophy

Stamford Bridge Scorpions, sponsored by Direct Tile Importers, secured a perfect end to the season by winning the York RI five-a-side tournament. It was no less than the Scorpions deserved after an excellent second half to the season.

The tournament started with group stages and Scorpions were quick out of the blocks, brushing aside their local rivals Stamford A with a 5-0 win. Saffy Goddard bagged a brace and Millie Templeman scored a fine hat-trick, the third coming from a neat one-two with Emily Hyde.

The next match was tougher, against league winners York RI. Having gone 2-0 down, the Scorpions had most of the play. A trademark Goddard corner was finished by Templeman but the Scorpions suffered a 2-1 defeat after Templeman twice found the woodwork against her.

The Scorpions brushed off this setback with another win against Stamford B. Two more goals from Templeman were followed by defender Emma Orton running the full length of the pitch to score in a 3-0 win.

The Scorpions then lost first choice keeper Ellie Barker and had to complete the final two group matches with a makeshift team. The first was a 1-1 draw against Poppleton A with the Scorpions fighting back from a goal down. Templeman was again on target, netting after a scintillating passing move with Goddard. Scorpions then breezed past Poppleton B with Goddard netting the only goal, latching on to an Orton through ball and finishing with style.

Having finished third in the group, the Scorpions were pitted against York RI in the semi-finals. The first half was tense and the Scorpions needed Alex Harvey’s strong tackling to keep them in the game. Just before half time, Scorpions struck with Goddard finding Templeman who made no mistake. York RI piled on pressure in the second half but couldn’t breach the Scorpions’ tight defence and the game ended 1-0.

The final was another tight game against Poppleton A. Poppleton had the early play but Orton and Harvey looked solid. Again, it was just before half time when Templeman played a neat one-two with Goddard and then trickled the ball beyond the stretching keeper. Poppleton pressed and Vicky Sands had to make an amazing save for the Scorpions to keep a rasping shot out. Scorpions were dangerous on the break but Goddard’s strong runs just couldn’t find Templeman.

At the other end, long throws caused havoc for the Scorpions but Harvey, Orton and Templeman all showed great determination to block half shots and secure the trophy for the Scorpions.
