Scorpions in the ascendancy

City of York Girls League - Under-13s

Stamford Bridge Scorpions.................................................................................3

Fulford.................................................................................................................1

Stamford Bridge Scorpions, sponsored by Direct Tile Importers, ended their season with a well-fought 3-1 home win against Fulford.

Fulford started brightly but struggled to create clear chances with Ella Spanton and Alex Harvey standing firm. Scorpions replied and came close when Millie Templeman whipped in a fierce cross that Saffy Goddard couldn’t quite connect with.

After a to and fro half it was Fulford who struck first. A well-taken throw was deflecting wickedly and, despite getting a hand on it, Ellie Barker couldn’t prevent the ball from trickling in.

This woke the Scorpions and they camped in the Fulford half in search of an equaliser. It came when a Goddard corner was controlled by Emma Orton and her strike was deflected in by Olivia Cant. The Scorpions were now in the ascendancy and were soon in front. Another perfectly-struck Goddard corner was met full on by Templeman who crashed the ball into the roof of the net. A third wasn’t long in coming when Ella Spanton’s long clearance found Templeman in space and she neatly tucked it round the keeper into the corner of the net.

Fulford battled back in the second half but couldn’t penetrate the Scorpions back line. Vicky Sands and Emily Hyde gave them no space and Orton mopped up the loose balls. At the other end, Scorpions always looked dangerous and, after neat interplay between Harvey and Templeman, Goddard almost broke through. Scorpions corners were still causing problems and another flighted ball from Goddard was met by the head of Orton, but it flew just over.

Despite the win, Scorpions just missed out on third place in the league, although their fine run of form was not bettered by anyone in the second half of the season.
