Panthers fall down

York Mitchell Sports League - Under-10s

Fulford.............................................................................2

Pocklington Panthers......................................................1

This week the boys faced another away tie to Fulford. Ryan pulled a muscle warming up, which meant a change to the line-up, Tom slotting into midfield with Luke dropping into defence and taking on the captain’s role.

Panthers started the game well, having all the early pressure. Will signalled his intentions early on with a fine shot that just clipped the post with the keeper stranded. Panthers kept the pressure on and Josh was unlucky on three minutes with a shot going narrowly wide.

Fulford attacked, but Charlie was solid in defence, beating the forward to the ball then moving up the left wing and playing the ball across field to pick out Jamie, whose run then played Will in to force a corner. Jamie picked the ball up on the edge of the area, hitting a fine ball back across the goal, and Josh flicked on, forcing a fine save from the keeper.

Fulford responded by making a good move down the left wing, with the forward cutting inside to hit a good shot. But Matty in goal for Panthers was equal to this, pulling off a fine save to deny Fulford just before the break, with the teams going in level at half time.

Fulford started the second half but were soon closed down by a combination of Will and Tom in midfield. Panthers pushed forward with Will forcing another corner. Will elected to take this with Luke meeting the ball in the centre, his fine shot cleared off the line by the defender with the keeper beaten.

Fulford broke, which had Panthers caught out of position, but Charlie had tracked back and did well to get his head on the cross to clear his lines. Fulford continued to pile on the pressure, with Luke and Charlie having to work hard in defence, with Luke coping well playing out of his usual position.

Fulford were being limited by the boys to shots from outside the box, but they did hit a good shot which Matty did very well to tip on to the crossbar.

Panthers were soon back on the attack with Tom pushing through midfield and down the wing, sending in a cross that was met beautifully by Will with a fine shot into the roof of the net to give Panthers a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

Panthers were really running the game when Fulford broke forward hitting a shot from outside the box, which Matty saved well but was unlucky when the loose ball fell at the forward’s feet for Fulford to level.

Fulford, now revitalised, attacked again winning a throw in. From this, Panthers didn’t close down like they normally do and the ball, bobbling about in the box, was poked in to give Fulford a 2–1 lead totally against the run of play.

Panthers continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, Jamie and Josh closing the Fulford defence down on the edge of their own box on several occasions but time ran out and, despite being by far the better side, Panthers went down 2-1.

Man of the match was awarded to Will for his overall contribution.
