Hat-tricks for Scorpions

City of York Girls League - Under-13s

Stamford Bridge Scorpions produced a battling display but couldn’t quite hold out against an impressive York RI team.

The home side started strongly and produced dangerous crosses, but their strikers found Ella Spanton on fine form in the Scorpions goal. Time and again she saved as the Scorpions struggled to find their feet. Changes were needed and Scorpions adopted man-to-man marking and, with Alex Harvey and Emily Hyde blocking well and Emma Orton mopping up the loose balls, the Scorpions regained some control.

At the other end, Saffy Goddard looked dangerous on the break and nearly found Millie Templeman with a fierce cross but the ball ran loose. Scorpions applied pressure but they couldn’t connect with corners and York RI broke quickly, forcing Olivia Cant to race back to intercept.

The second half was more of the same. York RI had most of the play but the Scorpions held firm. Templeman and Orton made courageous headed clearances and Spanton remained solid. Finally, just when it looked like the Scorpions would hold out, York RI struck.

A corner was half cleared but the ball was struck through a crowd of players and crept in. Scorpions pushed forward for an equaliser but, despite Templeman driving them forward and Goddard pressurising, the home defence stubbornly cleared its lines and the champions secured the win.

A great team display was epitomised by a showpiece hat-trick from both Saffy Goddard and Millie Templeman.

Scorpions were quick out of the blocks, with Olivia Cant winning tackles to feed her strikers. Templeman had come close twice before she struck a vicious cross that Goddard met with a neat flick to grab the first goal.

Flyers were no pushovers and their quick forwards forced Ella Spanton and Alex Harvey into saving tackles. Emma Orton snapped away at the Flyers midfield and kept winning possession for the Scorpions to build attacks. Having hit the post, Templeman finally struck. A neat ball from Goddard found her in space and she finished coolly. Having bagged another before half time, Templeman completed her hat-trick early in the second half, breaking clear of the Fulford defence and lashing home a fierce strike that left the keeper defenceless.

The Flyers kept going and, with the wind and slope in their favour, they pushed the Scorpions back. Vicky Sands made some great blocks and Orton headed clear corners before a bouncing ball was nodded in for a consolation. The Scorpions’ flowing football was proving too much for Fulford though, and with Harvey stepping forward to link with the forwards, the chances kept coming.

It wasn’t long before the fifth goal came, when Emily Hyde won a tackle and linked with Templeman who played a peach of a ball to Goddard who raced through and struck the ball into the top corner.

The sixth goal was possibly the best. Orton fed Templeman who weaved in and out of tackles then whipped the ball across and, on the run, Goddard met it clean on the volley and clipped it in off the post to complete her first hat-trick for the club.
