First win for Stamford U13s

City of York Girls U13s Football League

Stamford Bridge Under-13s.................................1

Driffield Under-13s..............................................0

Stamford kicked off the game aiming for their first win of the season against their higher-placed rivals.

A five passing move from kick off looked impressive but failed to create a chance. It was not long, however, before a move down the left involving Eve Ferguson and Natalie Lynch saw a Ferguson cross cleared to the edge of the area where Hannah Robertson shot strongly into the Driffield goal to break the deadlock.

Driffield were not without their attacks, set up at times by strong goal kicks down the right for the winger to run on to but on a fast pitch the ball ran just passed the outstretched foot of the Driffield player. The game was evenly contested until half-time.

The second half was much more evenly-matched with both sides creating chances. Driffield had a good spell of possession resulting in a shot deflected onto the Stamford bar, shortly to be followed by a cross goal shot being pushed on to the post by the outstretched hand of Georgia Stanton in the Stamford goal.

Eve Walters, partnered in the Stamford defence by Ellie Fitzmaurice held firm as Driffield grew in confidence. A ball out of defence from Walters found Natalie Lynch on the right hand side who skipped past the full back, crossed low and hard finding Ellie Whytock who laid the ball back neatly to Ferguson whose shot was well saved by the Driffield keeper.

The game, played on an excellent pitch, suited Stamford’s passing game and just gave them the edge in an overall evenly-matched game.
