City of York Girls Football League - Under-13s
Stamford Bridge Scorpions 1
Stamford Bridge Scorpions, sponsored by Direct Tile Importers, secured their sixth league win in seven attempts with a fine win away at Driffield.
A makeshift Scorpions team was weakened with the loss of two players just before the match and keeper Ellie Barker had to play carrying an injury. This showed in the early encounters as Scorpions failed to get the ball under control and Driffield pressure forced early corners that swung dangerously through the Scorpions goalmouth.
As the half progressed, the Scorpions began to find their rhythm. Millie Templeman began to get her foot on the ball and soon released Saffy Goddard who blasted a rasping drive just over. Next it was Templeman who was released by Emma Orton and created space before belting a fine shot just over. The half ended with Scorpions on top but neither side could find a breakthrough.
The Scorpions started the second half where they left off and the talismanic Templeman was proving a real handful. Having threatened with driving runs at the home defence, Alex Harvey released her with a neat pass and she crashed a thunderous volley against the bar. Soon afterwards, the Scorpions finally got their just reward. Goddard swung in a peach of a corner and Templeman clipped in a neat finish.
Driffield responded but found Scorpions determined and well-organised. Vicky Sands and Harvey proved a solid wall and with midfield dynamo Orton constantly snapping away and debutant Emily Hyde providing valuable cover, Driffield struggled to create any clear chances.
As the half wore on, Scorpions found their confidence and played some attractive football. Harvey was stepping out of defence and laying neat balls inviting Goddard and Templeman to menace the Diffield defence. Orton was also finding more space and Scorpions nearly had a second when she clipped a neat lob over the Driffield back line but, as Goddard raced in on goal, a defender did enough to unsettle her and she shot just wide.
With the score at 1–0 there was always a risk of a comeback, but Ellie Barker remained alert to any loose balls and the Scorpions secured a composed win.
