Barmby complete league campaign

York Minster Engineering League - Division Three

Wheldrake.........................................................................0

Barmby Moor....................................................................2

Barmby Moor completed their league campaign with victory over already-relegated Wheldrake to secure a creditable mid-table finish. April’s weather has proved a big frustration and Wheldrake agreed to stage this game at Barmby in order to complete their fixtures, due to their pitch being waterlogged.

The first half saw Barmby playing into the wind and, after 15 minutes, Will Nicholson linked up with Curtis Barker, whose curling shot found the corner of the net. The same combination doubled the lead on the half-hour mark as Nicholson’s pass sent Barker racing clear to finish with an accurate low shot.

With the wind at their backs, Barmby could have expected the floodgates to open in the second period but, despite dominating the majority of possession, Wheldrake stuck to their task and Barmby produced a disjointed display, perhaps partly due to their mid-week exertions in the East Riding Cup.

On the Wednesday night, Barmby had secured an East Riding Cup final place following a semi-final against Hull opposition Waterloo. The game had previously been postponed on three occasions due to the weather, but on a rainy night in Pocklington, two second-half goals from Nik Palfreyman and Will Nicholson secured their place in the final.

Thanks to Shepherdson Builders for their sponsorship and also to John and Andy from the Boot and Slipper for their hospitality throughout the season.
