On Saturday, Pocklington CC first XI entertained Division three leaders, Duncombe Park, on a damp, dull day.
The game eventually got underway two hours late, with the sun breaking through, after persistent drizzle. Alex Downey, captain for the day, won the toss and inserted the opposition in a 35-over fixture.
From the start, Pocklington were well below par, bowling and fielding poorly for the third week on the bounce.
All the bowlers (Downey, Ash Warner, Chris Saltmer, Stevie Adams and Geoff Woodward) bowled inconsistent lengths, with the ball vanishing to all parts of the picturesque Burnby Hall ground.
The prodigious Brian Leckenby came into the game with scores of 104 not out and 175 not out, and he continued his form. Purists would say this was not his best knock, but he and his opening partner Phil Marwood (72) put on 144 for the first wicket. Both were dropped several times and Leckenby, on 35, was stumped, only to be given not out as the umpire seemed to be distracted.
Leckenby (72) finally fell, for the first time this season, to a catch in the deep by evergreen Andy Forman giving Leckenby a season average of 351. Woodward picked up 3-36 off four overs, but the pick of the bowlers was Iain Moorhouse who claimed 2-52 off nine. The leg spinner has easily been Pocklington’s best bowler so far this season - just reward for a winter Down Under. Duncombe made a large 234-5 off their 35 overs – a total that was well beyond Pocklington, especially when in-form batsman Andy Inns run himself out in the second over. Neal Jackson, struggling with his eyesight, went for a duck, leaving the innings in tatters.
Gary Milner, playing his first game in seven years for the first XI, looked comfortable for 27, but Forman and Downey both failed, leaving experienced Neil Readman (53 not out) and Geoff Woodward (34) to bat out the overs. Pocklington closed on 132-6 in their 35 overs.
A disappointing performance against a team that will almost certainly be up near the top at the end of the season. Next week the first XI travel to an improving Carlton Towers, hoping to get their season back on track.
