Cricket: Heavy defeat for Pocklington 3rds at Ovington

Pocklington Thirds bowlers and fielders struggled again as they suffered a heavy defeat away to Ovington.

Pocklington won the toss and elected to bowl, hoping that they would hold onto any chances that came their way to avoid a repeat of last week’s fielding performance.

And they got off to a good start as Pete Eastwood removed Ovington opener Svenson in the first over.

However, Pocklington again struggled to hold on to catches, and new batsman Morrison took full advantage as he scored a century.

He was finally removed towards the end of the innings when Chris Bullock bowled him for a fine 119.

A couple more wickets fell in the final few overs, including a smart stumping by Charlie Wilson off the bowling of Charlie Dodds.

Ovington compiled 234-5, but again Pocklington were left feeling they could have been chasing a smaller total had their fielding not been so sloppy, though at times they were not helped by the rough state of the outfield.

Pete Eastwood collected two wickets and only went for 29 during his opening spell and Michael Longster bowled some tidy overs without reward in his first game in senior cricket.

Pocklington got off to a bad start as they hunted down Ovington’s total, losing two early wickets, which realistically meant the best they could do was bat out the overs, and achieve as many batting bonus points as possible. Wilson and youngster Alex Smith did this very well, making sure Pocklington did not lose any more wickets before drinks.

Wilson fell soon after drinks for 24 in his first innings of the season, and was soon followed by Smith who impressed with the way he hung around against the Ovington bowlers.

After losing a couple of quick wickets, Bullock and Huw Jones steadied the ship and ensured Pocklington reached the point where they started collecting bonus points. Pocklington at least managed to bat out the overs, reaching 133-8, losing by 101 runs with Bullock finishing on 55 not out.

Pocklington will hope to have eradicated their fielding woes when they play their next league game in two weeks time away at Malton and Old Malton.
