Pocklington CC 1st XI: 86-6 (25 overs), J Room 24, A Boasman 3-52

Pocklington managed to complete their first game of the season on Saturday against Welton & Brough, recording a losing draw in a rain-affected, reduced-over match.

Many thanks must go to the groundsmen who managed to get the ground fit to play after the torrential downfalls during the week, enabling the players to get some much-needed competitive action.

Pocklington, whose match ball was sponsored by Room Painters, won the toss and asked the visitors to bat. The game began an hour late due to rain, but tidy early bowling from Ash Warner (4-46) and Downey restricted the opposition to 12-2. Rain then intervened for a further 30 minutes, early tea was taken and the game resumed with Welton & Brough being reduced to 42-4 before a further short break.

When play resumed, Welton & Brough had their final nine overs to post a target. G Copley (43), the Welton & Brough opener, began to dominate with some good straight hitting for the final nine overs, leaving a credible score of 113-8 off their 25 overs.

Pock, in return, faced some quality bowling from left-arm spinner A Boasman (3-52) who tied down one end and made runs hard to come by. Andy Inns and Ian Camwell opened but were removed early to leave the score at 8-2. A partnership between Rich Readman and Ted Donkin then built the score to 44 before Donkin was removed. By this time, the required run rate was close to nine an over and Pocklington lost a further two wickets, leaving the hosts reeling at 46-5. In came Joss Room and Neil Readman to steady the ship and reach three quarters with a ball to spare.

In summary, this was a competitive opening to the season in testing conditions allowing the team to dust off the cobwebs and prepare for the season ahead.
