Where do bowlers go in winter?
Well, many of the Stewart Bowling Club at Pocklington are pretty active during the winter months.

One group plays at South Cave indoor rink, others attend a similar facility at Huntington, many of them travel to short mat bowling at Wilberfoss.
The Stewart Club itself have formed a very good partnership with the neighbouring Sports Club on Burnby Lane, which provides a popular and well-used indoor short mat facility.

Several members go each week to the York Bowling Club at Acomb, some for social bowling, and yet more play in a Veterans League, and the picture shows one of the Stewart stalwarts, Malcolm Fairbairn opening another league match at the York venue.

The indoor game is very different from our ‘proper grass’.

The woods travel like lightning, and they turn prodigiously, so the early winter season problem is to actually keep the things on the rink, never mind scoring!

Most of us use our normal woods, and we have to quickly learn to compensate for the different conditions on the carpet.

All in all, indoor bowling is a good way of keeping your hand in, because the closed season seems very long, but we all look forward to getting back to ‘proper bowling’ – on grass.
