BOTH Londesborough Park's senior teams failed to bowl a ball last weekend as the summer of discontent in weather terms continued its unrelenting desire to washout weekend sport.
And though the re-arranged annual senior Pub and Club Six-a-Side competition held last Sunday eventually succumbed to a torrential downpour it was not before some enjoyable cricket had been played on either side of the ground. In the ‘scoreboard’ corner the club cricketers, which included a few ‘wannabes’ and ‘hasbeens’, performed under the guises of Hawkett’s Harriers, Nobody’s Inn, Market Weighton Magpies, Northern Boyz Luv Gravy and Meadow Drivers, whilst in the ‘nuts corner’ the local hostelries were represented by teams from the Red Lion, the Half Moon, the Bay Horse and Market Weighton Institute, together with Market Weighton Wasters.

All competitors experienced the usual mickey taking, surprises and disasters, all enjoyed by a healthy crowd, Wilf Martin’s golden duck proving to be particularly popular. However, with the event moving towards a climax the heavens opened, leaving pitches in a similar condition to the ground on the final day of Glastonbury.

Club officials hastily convened and decided to conclude the remaining matches by way of a bowl off - each team member bowling one delivery at the stumps - a feat far harder than it looks. The decision proved to be popular with most as the tension built and the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ of near misses rang out.

Eventually the Club competition was won by the Meadow Drivers with the Griffin prevailing in the pub contest.

Thanks go to all participants and supporters, umpires and scorers, beer and tea bar staff, the hosts of the barbecue, groundstaff and club officials who all contributed to a fun day despite the vagaries of the great British summer.
