At the Selby Festival in 2007, sunburn was the principal danger; in 2008 it was hypothermia, but the cold and the rain didn't dampen the Pocklington spirits as the Under 11s put in a great display of controlled rugby to reach the semi finals of the Selby Festival.
Doncaster were the first victims. Finlay chipped ahead, and when the Doncaster defence failed to deal with the ball James was on hand to carry it over the line for the opening try. Pockington continued to control the first half by playing simple ru
gby, changing ends with the score at 5-0. A try by Charlie, converted by Alfie made it 12-0 and strong forward pressure set James up to crash over for the final try, which Alfie duly converted to record a 19-0 victory in the opening match.

A great break by Tom Foster set up Pock’s best position of the first half of the second match but a dogged display by West Park meant that the first half ended scoreless. Concert-ed forward pressure by Pock in the second half eventually told and Charlie crossed the line to win the match 5-0.

The final pool match against hosts Selby saw a great performance, particularly from the pack. Though the match ended scoreless Pocklington dominated territory and possession, ending the match camped on the Selby line, having been held up over the line twice.

A semi-final place was the least the Pocklington side deserved for their efforts in their pool matches. And the semi against Leodiensians started well when Charlie chased the ball over the line to score.

At half-time Leos re-grouped, however, and mid-way through the second half forced over for an equalising try. This gave them a second wind and they came at Pocklington again, scoring again in the final minute. Pocklington seemed to have prevented them from grounding the ball, but after some delay the referee awarded the try and Leos went through to the final.

Pocklington U11s played good intelligent rugby in all four of their games. If the progress they have shown is continued, then success in one of the forthcoming festivals is assured.
