LANE RENTAL SERVICES sponsored Pocklington Sunday played three league games in six days as their season drew to a close, starting with a home match against Bishopthorpe on the Tuesday night.
A poor first half defensive performance saw Town go into the interval 2-0 down and after strong words at half time, a much improved second half saw goals from Charlie Bond and Kalum Horne rescue a point for Town as Pock dominated the second period.
Excellent games from debutants Alex Fletcher and Ted Donkin and top scorer Charlie Bond contributed to a solid last 45 minutes and a deserved point.
Last Thursday night saw Town at home to Selby Griffin, a team with promotion ambitions and who remained on course for a top three finish with a comprehensive 6-1 defeat of a Pocklington side who had several players playing their third match in as many days.
On a night that also saw several defensive mistakes punished with goals, there weren't many highlights although the MOM performance of Kalum Horne and a first Sunday team goal for Dan Croft were the main plus points from the match. With Selby Griffin containing several Selby Town first teamers, they were quicker to the ball and used it better than a Town team who worked hard but struggled.
Pocklington travelled to Selby to play the away game against a Griffin side who were missing several players from the Thursday game and with Town strengthened by the return of several players themselves, a 5-5 thriller was the result.
Two teams who are good at attacking but weak defensively put on an excellent game in the rain soaked conditions. Town took the lead when good work by Lawson set up Boneham for a lob over the keeper. Griffin then took a 3-1 lead into half time as uncertain Pock defending allowed them two of their three goals. This set up an end to end second period that saw Town reduce the deficit to 3-2 with a goal from Kalum Horne before Griffin restored their two goal advantage.
Town made it 4-3 when James Haigh bagged his first as he finished off a well worked move and despite Selby making it 5-3 with a goal that was a mishit cross, Town clawed back two goals in the last 10 minutes with goals from Rob Gibson and Daz Hobson, the equaliser coming after some woeful defending from the Selby team with only two minutes to go.
Pocklington now have one more league game remaining, away to York Nomads on Thursday 24th April and will have played their cup semi final, away to Division One team Thorpe United last Tuesday by the time you read this.
