Six hours of non-stop rugby went down to the final kick when Pocklington RUFCs junior section staged its annual Junior Charity Sevens Festival, sponsored by Agriyork 400, on Sunday.
The festival, for Under 13, 14 and 15 age levels, had produced equal numbers of cliffhanger encounters and high scoring games, but none was closer than the last game of the day, the Under 15s final between Selby and Pocklington.

The host side went ahead early on with a converted try and looked likely winners. But Selby hung on and equalised early in the second half. Pocklington thought they had won it with a try out wide with a minute to go, but with the final play of afternoon Selby broke away to score midway out, then held their nerve to win it with a difficult drop-kick conversion.

The event was originally snowed off on Easter Sunday, but the rearrangement resulted in an increased entry of teams and a bigger crowd of supporters. And though the teams came from clubs from across Yorkshire, plus North-East visitors Percy Park, all three age levels threw up local derby finals.

At Under 13s, Beverley’s two sides made the semi-finals. But both fell at the final hurdle as Pocklington and Driffield went through to contest the silverware. Pocklington did not have an under 13 outfit at the start of the season, and their new team has come on so much in such a short time. But Sunday’s final was just one step too far as they were outmuscled by a bigger Driffield side who won 33-0 to lift the cup.

At Under 14 level Pocklington A had a comfortable win over Malton B in the first semi, while Malton A knocked out West Riding side, Roundhegians. In the final Pocklington always looked the livelier side but must have wondered if it was not going to be their day as they had three first half tries disallowed before finally getting it right to win with three second half scores.

At Under 15s Pocklington finally found their best form to put out Goole and go through to meet Selby, victors over Percy Park in their semi final that could have gone either way.

And that proved to be a fitting finale to a memorable day, which closed with the teams being presented with their trophies by Pocklington RUFC 1st XV captain, Sandy Mitchell.

Results.

Under 13 Semi-finals: Pocklington 40 Beverley B 0; Beverley A 7 Driffield 28. Final: Pocklington 0 Driffield 33.

Under 14 Semi-finals: Pocklington A 33 Malton & Norton B 5; Roundhegians 0 Malton & Norton A 22. Final: Pocklington 21 Malton & Norton 0.

Under 15 Semi-finals: Pocklington 26 Goole 5; Selby 10 Percy Park 7. Final: Selby 14 Pocklington 12.
