POCKLINGTON Town have reached the Grays Cup final for the second time.
Improving Town were too good for fellow Premier Division side Malet Lambert and easily booked their place in the final on May 3 against league front runners Smith & Nephew who won the other semi final on the adjacent Hutton Cranswick pitch, beating N
orth Ferriby reserves by 2 goals to nil.
Town won their semi final by 6-0.
The two semi-finals were played simultaneously at Rotsea Lane, and for Pocklington it was a golden opportunity to make their mark in a Humber League competition.
From the kick-off, although playing into a strong breeze, the team's determination was evident and none more so than Lee Drobac and Calum Horne forming the spearhead up front. Town quickly settled to the task and took charge of the mid-field battle which was going to be crucial on what for them was a small pitch.
It took fifteen minutes for Town to make the breakthrough. A Mark Watkinson free-kick from out on Town’s right wing was directed in to the near post for the alert Lee Drobac to stoop and head the ball over the goalkeeper.
Within ten minutes another Watkinson ball in was handled by a Malet defender and James Rudd made no mistake from the penalty spot.
The sheer pressure which Town had exerted on the Malet Lambert team throughout the first half was re-applied from the restart. Malet knew they had to at least match this standard to survive but their efforts began to result in fouls and then frustration. This inevitably played into Pocklington's hands. A half cleared corner kick fell to Watkinson whose fierce shot was deflected into the Malet goal by Drobac's backside. The same attacker was then upended in the Malet penalty area and Rudd again converted from the spot.
Space was now available for Dave Ablett and substitute Matty Bayram to exploit the flanks. Bayram set Rudd free to send over a pin point cross which Ablett deftly controlled and set up Drobac for an easy tap in.
For the final goal Rudd again attacked down the right and his cross was headed home by Drobac in classic fashion.
Richie Millet and Alex Fletcher came on to maintain the grip which Town had on the game. The back line of Watkinson, Gibson, Silburn and Hargreaves, including goalkeeper Carl Silburn, rarely looked like conceding. Manager Geoff Goodwin must have been proud of the supreme effort which every player displayed in building the biggest winning margin of the season.
o Meanwhile Smith & Nephew scored two with no reply to book their place in the final to be played at North Ferriby on the evening of Friday 3rd May. Pocklington, sponsored by Marshal Tyres, will then have the opportunity to prove they are as good as any team in the league by beating the team currently vying for the championship with Sculcoates Amateurs.
