Saturday saw a disastrous League programme as all three Woodhouse teams suffered defeats.
The first XI were inserted on a wet and under prepared wicket at Acomb and lost their unbeaten record as Dave Sykes ran through them with 8-23. After collapsing to 5-5 and 6-7 a minor recovery was led by Steve Burdett (24) and Tom Quinn (14), but the
final total of 57 all out was always going to be inadequate.
It took Acomb only 13.2 overs to claim the win by 8 wickets, led by Leon Sacks (28) and Andy Tute (26 not out). Joel Hughes and Tom Quinn took a wicket each. Woodhouse remain top of the Division but with their lead cut from 65 pts to 36.
The second team made slow progress batting first against Malton and Old Malton to reach only 146-9. Marcus Smith was the mainstay with 63 and he joined in the only two successful stands, 44 with James Rudd (21) and 56 with Stuart Craven (23).
Malton’s most successful bowler was Simon Cass with 4-43 in 12 overs. In reply Malton were untroubled as they strolled to 148-4 in only 29 overs. J Spencer fell one short of his hundred on 99. Neil Barrett took 3-23 and young Harry Collins claimed the other wicket as Woodhouse lost by 6 wickets. The Seconds slide from third to fifth in their Divisional table.
The third team completed the hat-trick of defeats at Heworth. The home team were 7-2 before recovery came in a 118 run stand between G Sykes (60) and M Huffer (53) to push them to 148-9. Kevin Smith took 4 for 19, Andy Collins 3-27 and Scott Shepherd 2-41. Steve Ainley chipped in with four victims behind the stumps - two catches and two stumpings. Wood-house were then bowled out for 114 with only Ashley Cattle (45) and Sam Craven (23) making major contributions, as former Woodhouse Junior Aaron Solanki claimed 3-14. Defeat by 34 runs.
On Sunday the Third team reached the semi-final of the Vale League Cup when they defeated Wheldrake by 3 wickets. Woodhouse used nine bowlers to reduce Wheldrake to 113-7 in their 40 overs. The most successful was Ashley Cattle, who took 3-7. Woodhouse’s reply was stuttering, but they finally got home at 115-7 thanks to 41 from Matthew Shepherd and 36 from Louis Smith.
o On Tuesday Woodhouse at least reached one Final, that of the Sawkill Cup, when a magnificent innings by Mike Burdett saw them beat Acomb at Stamford Bridge. His 112 not out off only 51 balls contained 9 fours and 6 sixes in a ferocious display of hitting. With Joel Hughes (31 not out) he put on an unbeaten 117 for the fifth wicket off only 5 eight ball overs. Woodhouse totalled 202-4, and although Acomb manfully stretched to 154-4 (Andy Tute 66) the huge target was always beyond them.
