DESPITE the Arctic wind and the slate grey skies, Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club were able to complete two pre-season fixtures last weekend even though all players were heavily swathed in several layers of sweaters.
On Saturday, Woodhouse batted first against Stamford Bridge and totalled 185-6 in their 40 overs. Andrew Anderson batted sensibly for 36 before Joel Hughes (53) and newcomer Lloyd Devlin (59 not out) added some aggression.
The same pair took earl
y wickets as Stamford’s reply was reduced to 65-8. Hughes 3-16 and Devlin 2-5, aided by Tony Smith’s 2-30. Then came a remarkable father and daughter partnership as the score was more than doubled by Lauren Winfield (41) and her father Andy (35 not out) as Stamford finished on 144-9. Woodhouse gave seven bowlers an early season stretch.
On Sunday Beverley were the visitors as Woodhouse again batted first. Jon Bean (41) and Nick Hadfield (59 retired) put on 118 for the first wicket before allowing Lloyd Devlin (37 not out) and Simon Dwyer (40 not out) to add a further 83 in only 14 overs. Woodhouse finished on 201-1.
Beverley’s reply was soon reduced to 2-2 and although they recovered it was rather slowly as Anthony Spence made 47 and Ian Gillyon 32 in their final score of 125-6. Five Woodhouse bowlers took a wicket each to add to a run out.
