SUPERBIKES star Chris Martin is hoping to chalk up his first points this weekend as he heads to Thruxton for the second race meeting of the season.
The Shiptonthorpe star is riding in this season's Fuchs Silkolene-sponsored Super-sport event after an indifferent year in the main Superbikes championship.

However, his hopes of getting off to a flying start earlier this month were dashed when heavy snowfall forced the opening meeting at Brands Hatch to be abandoned.

Using his usual number, 26, he is racing for Gearlink Kawasaki and is hoping to emulate the success he enjoyed in 2006 when he lifted the Privateers Cup.

Close friend and Superbikes fan Paula Jessop, said: "Owner of Gearlink, Michael de Bidaph, has worked very hard to secure the factory bikes.

"Chris has been to Spain testing and he is very pleased with the whole team, the bike set up, and is getting some very good lap times.

"He is now looking forward to the new challenge."

Racing for Honda last year, Chris struggled to pick up points in the main Superbikes event, eventually finishing 21st overall in a field of 36 riders.

As part of the British Supersport competition, he will enjoy greater TV coverage with every round shown live on Eurosport with highlights on Channel 4.

Despite this, Chris still requires constant sponsorship to allow him to keep racing.

A fundraising evening is planned for next Saturday, 26 April at the Wellington Oak, where there will be a live band playing, a raffle and auction which will include Superbikes memorabilia.

Tickets are £5 and available from The Wellington Oak, Forth's Printers in Pocklington and Bean's Butchers Market Weighton

Anyone willing to sponsor Chris can contact his mother, Liz Martin on (01430) 873600 for details.
