Despite predictions of very high winds and rain, 165 Triathletes from across the country gathered at Allerthorpe Lakeland Park for the inaugural Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon on Sunday morning.
Ahead of them lay a 750m swim in the Watersports Lake at Allerthorpe, a 20km cycle around the lanes between Allerthorpe, Melbourne, Seaton Ross and Bielby, then finally a 5km run from the park out to the Pocklington canal path and back.
The event
attracted a quality field with competitors travelling from across the region and as far away as London and the Scottish borders.
A two wave swim saw Pocklington’s Tom Room, who competes for the Planet X / University of Bath team, first man out of the water in 8:54, closely followed by 16 year old Jamie Martin from Harrogate in 9:19.
Fastest ladies swimmer was Lisa Tweedle from Houghton-le-Spring in 10:44, with York’s Abbey George-Plunkett hot on her heels in 11:12.
Out on the cycle course the competitors had to contend with very windy conditions which made for a tough time for all of them.
Darren Sharpe from the RAF Triathlon team was the fastest cyclist despite this being his second Triathlon of the weekend, having just completed the Dambuster Triathlon on Saturday.
His time of 29:11 was 23 seconds faster than Room’s 29:34.
White Rose Triathlete Rachel Lightfoot put in a very strong cycle ride to record the fastest ladies cycle time of 32:37, some 2:33 faster than second lady and eventual winner Louise Hanley of Leeds Bradford Tri Club.
Tom Room turned on the style to run the final 5km in a time of 19:22 just 7 seconds slower than fastest male runner Simon Brooksbank of Leeds Bradford Tri Club, with 16 year old Samuel Chambers of Dinnington splitting the two with 19:21.
Abbey George-Plunkett ran the 5km in a speedy 20:59, over two minutes ahead of second lady Helen Turton of Leeds Bradford Tri Club (23:12).
The outstanding performance of the day was by the youngest competitor in the race, 14 year old Oliver Dixon of Stamford Bridge, who competes for the White Rose Triathletes team.
Racing for the first time over this distance and in only his second senior race Oliver completed the eighth fastest swim (10:30), 15th fastest cycle (32:38) and 11th fastest run (20:11) (1:03:19 overall) on his way to winning the Youth category and placing sixth overall.
Many of the Triathletes will be returning to Allerthorpe in eight weeks time for the Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon over the longer distances of 1500m swim, 40km cycle, and 10km run course.
